HISTORICAL TOURIST DESTINATIONS
Liberty Bell
A bronzed bell installed in 1945by the American liberation forces located in Peñaranda Park along Rizal Street. It is enclosed with a dome-shaped concrete structure with this inscription, “Whenever oppression knocks at your door, feel free to ring this bell.”
Jose Ma. Peñaranda Monument
A monument built as a tribute to the late Jose Ma. Peñaranda who served as a Governor of Albay from 1834-1843 located at Peñaranda Park along Rizal Street.
Headless Monument
Located within the Legazpi City Post Office Compound at Barangay Lapu-Lapu, this monument was constructed as a dedication to the unknown heroes who died and shed their blood during the Japanese military occupation of Legazpi City.
Legazpi Heroes Memorial Pylon
A 16 meter high pylon in the commercial district of Legazpi. It is located at the junction of Rizal Street and Quezon Avenue in Legazpi Port District.
Japanese Tunnel
A 40-meter long L-shaped and seven-feet deep tunnel used by the Japanese forces as an arsenal during the 2nd World War. It is located at Barangay EM’s Barrio South in Albay District.
Gen. Jose Ignacio Paua
This is a small park located in Barangay Bañadero features a monument of the late Gen Paua, concrete benches and a waiting shed. This is also planted with different kinds of shrubs and flowering plants. Its triangular shape is formed by the converging streets of Rizal, Bañadero and E. Jacinto.
Matanag Cross
This can be found in the upper area of Barangay Matanag in honor of 77 farmers who were killed during the fatal eruption of Mayon Volcano in 1993.
NATURAL TOURIST DESTINATIONS
Mayon Volcano
Once acclaimed as one of the “Seven Wonders of the World” with its nearly perfect cone shape. The southern foot of the volcano is situated within the barangays of Buyuan, Matanag, Bonga and Mabinit. The Volcano stands at an elevation of 8,189 feet from a broad base of about 10kms. in radius and can be viewed within a radius of 10 kms. up to 50 kms. It has a crater measuring a half kilometer in diameter with a notched rim from which can be seen a pool of bubbling hot lava in the center and rich coal deposits on the sides.
Kapuntukan Hill
It is a two-hectare land and is barely half kilometer from the Legazpi Port. It is described as the sleeping lion because of its form and contour. The view can be more appreciated within a radius of about five kms. It is located within barangays Dapdap and Victory Village. Atop the hill, one is afforded a beautiful view of Legazpi at night and the neighboring municipalities of Manito and Rapu-Rapu.
Porta Azul
This resort in Padang is ideal for swimming, scuba diving, boating and speed boat racing. It is complete with modern and luxurious facilities.
Lingñon Hill
A place good for hiking, climbing, zip line, rappelling, and lava watching. It offers a 360 degree-view of the Mayon Volcano and a very good view of the city as well, especially at night. Visitors are encouraged to walk from the foot to the top of the hill.
MAN-MADE TOURIST DESTINATIONS
Legazpi Boulevard
A reclaimed area beside the Legazpi Port at barangay Victory village, overlooking the sea and has a good view of Kapuntukan Hill. The place is very wee lighted and very appropriate for strolling, biking and jogging.
Rizal Park and Monument
A modest place to pass away the time. Its dominating features are the monument of Jose Rizal sculpted by National Artist Napoleon Abueva in 1966, the fountain located at the center of the park, and the colorful geolites.
Locsin Park
Usually occupied for sports activities with perimeter fence, concrete stage, and benches for spectators, and a basketball court. The park is located along Rizal Street and is planted with trees and flowering plants on its sides.
Peñaranda Park
An improved park with elevated skating rink, concrete benches and stage surrounded with trees and ornamental plants and neon lights. It is located in front of the City Hall Building and the Provincial Capitol of Albay.
Freedom Park
This Park is located in Barriada, Barangay Gogon features a children’s playground with fountain at the center, concrete benches walks and curbs, around the park and colorful geolites. It is also planted with different kinds of trees and flowering plants. The park was designed by a Japanese Architect Shimizum. It is highlighted by an imposing piece of abstract bronze sculpture “mag-ilusyon” (scultured man and woman placed romantically at the center of the park.
CHURCHES AND SHRINES
Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine
Located atop the Buraguis Hill overlooking the city proper, and features life-size images of the characters of the Way of the Cross stations arranged within the hill slopes. A 20-feet image of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands at the hilltop. The feast day is celebrated every 12th day of December. A mini museum is also located within the compound.
St. Raphael Parish Church
A church located within the Legazpi Port Commercial District. St. Raphael is the Patron Saint of the city; feast day is celebrated every 24th day of October.
St. Gregory the Great Cathedral
This church attained the status of a cathedral when the Diocese of Legazpi had its residence in the Albay District; thus it became the Episcopal Seat.
Iglesia ni Kristo Church
Constructed in 1965, this serves as the central church of this religious denomination in the Province of Albay. It is located in Barangay Cabagñan.
